SIRIM-Approve Helmets

For years, government has advised that motorcyclists must wear SIRIM-approved helmets. However, some stubborn motorcyclists still refuse to do so. The reason that they give is that SIRIM-approved helmets cost more. In my opinion, motorcyclists should not take the risk.

As we all know, helmets act as important role in protecting motorcyclists’ head when there is an accident. Each year, lots of motorcyclists dead due to the severe damage to head caused by accidents. SIRIM-approved helmets have gone through series of experiments and their qualities are definitely promised. SIRIM is the minimum requirement that a rider’s helmet have to be compliant to be wear in Malaysia start from 1st Jan 2009. Overall, there are three types of helmets that are available on the market.

Full-Face Helmet

Full-Face Helmet is a full-face helmet which provides total coverage to the front and rear of rider's head. An added benefit of the full-face design is built-in eye protection in the form of a visor/face shield.

Flip-up Helmet

Flip-up Helmets are helmet with hybrid design that offer the best of the full-face and three-quarter helmet worlds.

Open-Face Helmets 3/4 Helmet

The open-face three-quarter motorcycle helmet design delivers significant protection for riders who want to feel the wind in their face.

Conclusion:

Never buy a helmet without SIRIM logo as it might not be able to protect your head. Helmets without SIRIM logo do not undergo product checking and their safety and quality are not guaranteed. Lastly, bear in mind that motorcyclists who do not use SIRIM-Approve Helmets will be summoned. Instead of wasting your money to pay the summon, why don’t you just buy a SIRIM-Approve Helmet?

  1. Does a RM1000.00 price difference justify a SIRIM approval? A Nolan N104 with N-Com B4 installed cost almost a thousand more with a SIRIM approval but yet it has already been DOT and ECE certified. So a SIRIM test is worth a thousand ringgit more?
I understand the importance of safety and its certification on helmets. But if you dig deeper, an ECE certified helmet may not have passed a DOT test and a DOT certified helmet may not have passed a SNELL test. So what governs these tests?
The bottom line is, its not that motorcyclists are stubborn but the exploitation of such standardization that has not been governed. If SIRIM has caused the price hike then why? Are the test that much more expensive? That needs to be highlighted. Because in one way or another, the price difference caused here is SIRIM. And as you rightfully mentioned, if you aren't wearing a SIRIM certified helmet, you're fined just to prove a point.

    1. RM1000 price difference id not dur to SIRIM certification because SIRIM certification is not very expensive. It is affordable to the industry. It does cost a little bit more than an uncertified helmets but it should not increase the price by RM1000. The big increase is due to bastards helmet sellers who want to suck peoples money more and then blame it on the SIRIM certification. They might buy the helmet at RM300, and then sell it at RM1000. So, I don't think the increase in RM 1000 is solely due to SIRIM certification.

    2. Then how do I conclude whether I am wearing a sirim helmet or not if accidents happen? I never want to get into trouble which I cannot claim any insurance due to buying and wearing helmets without sirim from any salesman in any motocycle shop!
